Can I Design My Own Home?
Is Collington a non-profit organization?
Yes, Collington has proudly been a 501(c)(3) since our inception in 1988, and is currently a part of the Kendal system of non-profit communities!
Is Collington Quaker or Episcopal?
Well, both! And neither! Our community was founded in the late 1980’s, inspired by a vision from some in the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, DC. Interestingly, the founding committee traveled the country, looking for different models for how to be in community, and quickly resonated with some Quaker communities, which eventually served as the blueprint and inspiration for Collington. So, it’s true that Collington was founded in part by leadership in the Episcopal church but inspired by and partially based on a Quaker model. Today, Collington is not formally affiliated with any religious group, but, as part of the Kendal system of communities, remains committed to its progressive, inclusive roots and values.
Do you have skilled nursing at Collington?
For many years, our Life Plan Community included independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing homes on campus. However, inspired by recent changes to Medicare and especially by resident preferences, our local Board elected to delicense our skilled nursing suites in 2022, opting instead to add an enhanced Level 3 assisted living neighborhood to care for those residents who require more care, including both long-term and short-term care needs. For more information of the evolution of the continuing care model and today’s trends, please ask your Residency Counselor for more details.
What’s the difference between independent living and assisted living? How do I know which is right for me or my loved one?
In Life Plan Communities, like Collington, residents most frequently join the community while they can medically (and cognitively) qualify to live independently, that is, without any assistance or support. As needs change, residents of these types of communities have the option to graduate to higher levels of care, including various levels of assisted living where they can receive support with Activities of Daily Living, including bathing, dressing, toileting, transferring, meal preparation, and medication administration. Generally, if a hopeful resident requires assistance or support with any of the above or receives any type of regular in-home care or support, they would be best served looking at assisted living options on campus.
