October 15, 2019 —Mitchellville, Maryland (July 15, 2019) — Collington, a not-for-profit continuing care retirement community in suburban Washington, D.C., garnered a “deficiency-free” grade on a recently completed annual survey of its skilled nursing neighborhood by the Maryland Department of Health’s Office of Health Care Quality. The coveted deficiency-free status is achieved by fewer than one in 10 nursing homes nationwide.
State surveyors arrived at Collington Tuesday morning, May 28, and when they concluded their in-depth examination of Collington’s skilled nursing care practices and facilities the following Friday afternoon no deficiencies were noted.
“We justifiably should celebrate with pride this accomplishment while extending our thanks to the care teams, Collington management, leadership and other support departments for their dedication and hard work,” Collington Board Chair Mike Nolin wrote in a June 3 letter to the Collington community. “Resident volunteers at the Creighton Center also deserve our collective thanks and recognition.”
The Maryland Department of Health’s Office of Health Care Quality is responsible for ensuring that skilled nursing facilities comply with state regulations and compliance requirements to be certified as a Medicare and/or Medicaid nursing home provider. Inspections, called surveys, are conducted at least annually, are unannounced and look thoroughly at every department including nursing, facilities, human resources, culinary, social services and policies and procedures.
“Receiving a deficiency-free survey is testament to Collington’s dedication to providing the highest quality person-centered health services to all residents,” said Megan Barbour, Administrator/Director of Operations. “It also speaks to the great compassion of staff who strive every day to provide care with dignity to Collington residents.”
This is Collington’s second deficiency-free survey this year. In January, Collington received a deficiency-free result on the annual survey of its assisted living neighborhood.
